چکیده

The Wigner-Araki-Yanase (WAY) theorem states a remarkable limitation to quantum mechanical measurements in the presence of additive conserved quantities. Discovered by Wigner in 1952, this limitation is known to induce constraints on the control of individual quantum systems in the context of information processing. It is therefore important to understand the precise conditions and scope of the WAY theorem. Here we elucidate its crucial assumptions, briefly review some generalizations, and show how a particular extension can be obtained by a simple modification of the original proofs. We also describe the evolution of the WAY theorem from a strict no-go verdict for certain, highly idealized, precise measurements into a quantitative constraint on the accuracy and approximate repeatability of imprecise

Spin-measurement retrodiction revisited

The retrodiction of spin measurements along a set of different axes is revisited in detail. The problem is presented in two different pictures, a geometric and a general algebraic one. Explicit measurement operators that allow the retrodiction are given for the case of three and four axes. For the Vaidman-Aharanov-Albert case of three orthogonal axes the quantum network is constructed for two d...

Decoherence and measurement in open quantum systems

We review results of a recently developed model of a microscopic quantum system interacting with the macroscopic world components which are modeled by collections of bosonic modes. The interaction is via a general operator Λ of the system, coupled to the creation and annihilation operators of the environment modes. We assume that in the process of a nearly instantaneous quantum measurement, the...

The quantum trajectory approach to quantum feedback control of an oscillator revisited.

We revisit the stochastic master equation approach to feedback cooling of a quantum mechanical oscillator undergoing position measurement. By introducing a rotating wave approximation for the measurement and bath coupling, we can provide a more intuitive analysis of the achievable cooling in various regimes of measurement sensitivity and temperature. We also discuss explicitly the effect of bac...

Lie fields revisited

A class of interacting classical random fields (which are “quantum random fields” in the sense that they have Poincaré invariant vacua with a fluctuation scale determined by h̄) is constructed using deformed algebras of creation and annihilation operators. The fields constructed are classical random field realizations of “Lie fields”.
